Its late, But...one of the many things that come across the table is toned or Dipped coins...how does this all come play into coins that are
120 year old coins" Terms: BLAST WHITE...RAINBOW...and such...these terms are contadicting..as any old coin should show SOME KIND of patina?
But it is well know people have for 50 years, cleaned coins(IN THE PROPER WAY)..to keep the luster by the way What is a proper cleaning?
is it still not a cleaned coin?

And then, Toned coins...SURE THERE are obivous minipulated toned coins, and then there are others who have not tried to over enhance a cleaned coin to bring it back to some form of toning..
The GRAND..battle ship grey of a circulated coin is a well know coin..supported as original...is it?
I
would like to hear your views and EXPERIENCE...

As I said I'm new to this as a hobby, I got my first Morgan (1896) about a year ago when we were going through my fathers things & I was hooked lined & sinkered on Morgans. It is a beautiful coin that has the pantina on it. It was sitting in a sock and is in awesome condition (my opinion) as soon as I can I'm going to put pictures up. I love the blueing. Is there a proper way to clean coins? I thought if you do that it lowers the value of the coin, Please enlighten me I need all info possible. Thank You, Lee

How do you know if a coin has been cleaned with tarn-x or something like it? Sorry for so many post, the questions come from reading the different forums so There not all at the same time. As I read I'm learning and questions arise.

To post photo's, I start by making a folder to transfer my pictures into, then use a photo program to RE-SIZE it below 100K.., there are many free programs, I use Irfanview, some use Gimp..just under where you type your message is a green button. click on this and browse to your folder and upload, they will then be posted when you "post new reply" give it a shot..

I'll try......

Just above the reply box that you use to type in messages, you will see these links:

New Topic... New Poll... Reply to Topic... Topic Subscription... Send Topic to a Friend... Printer Friendly

Click on the "Reply to Topic" link....... A new reply box will appear with a bunch of icons above it:

Hover your mouse over each item to get the hang of what each is and does.

Below that new reply to topic box, you will see a little green camera.... click on it.... A new box will open, and that is where you post pictures.... hit the "BROWSE" button.... now use the "Look in" window to find what portion of your computer you have saved your pictures (I save my pictures in "My Pictures").... double click on your image to transfer it to this site.... click on "upload image".... if your image is too big or is named with odd characters or spaces, you will need to rectify that prior to continuing.... Before you hit the reply button.... check it out to make sure that is the correct image, the way you want it to look by hitting the "Preview" button..... Most of this stuff will be self guided once you get to the green camera.

Some folks use photobucket or some other form of imaging rather than the images saved in their computer... I don't know anything about all of that, but here is a link on instructions (I think)....

A Dipped coin is just that. A coin dipped into a solution in order to remove toning/tarnish on silver....Tarnex is one very well know tarnish/toning remover with the exception that it is very caustic to coins...Over the years many Coin dealers have had there own Mild solutions in order to remove unsightly toning and keep those coins looking "BRAND NEW". However many times a coin is over dipped and dissolves/ eats the original mint surface...Leaving a coin marred that can not be repaired. leaving the coin much less that it would have been if untampered with..

What do you mean when you say dipped?

"Dipping" refers to the process of using an acid-based commercial coin cleaner on a coin. E-Z-Est and Jeweluster are two brand names, composed of sulfuric acid and thiourea. Dip is used to remove tarnish or toning but too many people misuse it and ruin the coin. Dip a coin too long and the luster will be stripped, leaving a coin with dull washed out surfaces. Circulated coins should not be dipped but frequently are dipped. Not rinsing a coin after dipping is another way to ruin it. The dip residue will eventually leave the coin with blotchy and unattractive surfaces.
