Would this be caused by a worn die or slipping of some sort?

Plating split. After exposed the zinc starts reacting.

you can certainly see it easier when the zinc starts corroding

Then this must be next,,,but how long,,I assume,,environment plays a factor in the spread,,I have a box of these,,some are not even identifiable anymore,,I thought it started as a large damaged area,,this is chemistry 101,,or is it,?Where can I learn more?

Could have been under water for some time or maybe a pin cushion for damage forced on this coin. Either way, spend it before it becomes a Hershey's wrapper. LOL
