Is there any way to lighten these old black copper coins ( Flying Eagle cents) without doing them harm?

On the opposite side of the coin what is your opinion of a chemical entitled Nic-a-Tone Cent Toner from Nic-A-Lene Co. as an agent to darken Cu coins?

Do any drawbacks, benefits, or procedural tips exist?

I just bought my first bottle.

I was waiting to try it until first getting some feedback from the CC's experienced users who have tried it or other similar ones.

Thanks,

mdpmedia

I really didn't think so. I was looking at a high grade '58 but it was coal black and I was thinking it would be super if it was just lighter. I ended up passing on it anyway, went to high ( ebay).

Thanks for the input guys.

FECs should not be coal black, that coin more than likely had "issues" and you were wise to pass on it.

1. Do not use it on coins. Try it on your cars tires and then throw the rest away.
2. If you read all the posts on this forum you would notice one rather repeditive statement. "DO NOT CLEAN COINS"
3. The cost of that stuff, the loss of a nice coin, your time just buying that stuff and you could have just purchased another coin.
4. I've experimented with almost anything ever made to clean coins and I still say "DON'T CLEAN COINS"

AND there is that little statement of not harmimg them. Almost any cleaning will make them shinny but usually that also means damaging.
