Long-time looker, first-time poster. Great site, folks! Thanks for the entertainment during these long, cold Iowa evenings! Most of you have probably read this, but here is a link for those of you that have yet to. http://news.coinupdate.com/cost-to-...nickel-0619/At some point, I'd (like to) think the government would pull their head out and fix this. Once again, my tax dollars not working quite as hard as I do. Losing money making money that has no backing. Frustrating...

I read that this morning. Makes you wonder how many more years they are going to bite the bullet on this one. It's only a matter of time before they pull production, until then, I am hoarding all the copper pennies/nickels I get.

They have no reason to fix anything as they simply take more money when they want it. But yes, I've been saving pennies and nickels for a while now...even selling some of the pennies...it's one way to get some of my money back.

And although a nice story, it's been discussed probably a zillion times everywhere. Slight exageration you know. But this is brought up on TV, in the newspapers, on the Radio, on the internet all the time and there is one big problem even discussing this. The people concerned just don't care. That is the US Government you know. To them the answer is simple. RAISE TAXES TO COVER THIS.

It seems we have another discussion on this here... https://goccf.com/t/78467Since this one was posted first, I will leave it open. What I said in the other thread... Quote: We should just go ahead and make the dime the smallest coin available. People will either learn to round their totals, or they will shift to electronic payments. Regardless, it would not be the end of the world. There are still plenty of coins to collect.

I agree, most people do not care, which is why the government should just go ahead with eliminating the cent and possibly the nickel. There will be complaints, but no one will offer any real resistance beyond their words. I can see changing the composition of the nickel, but the cent, even if it were plastic, is just unnecessary. I know a lot of people want to complain about being ripped off, but that fear is largely based on ignorance. I, too, love the cent. I would love to see it continue in NIFC fashion, possibly in a 95% copper composition like the 2009 cents. Yes, for me that would be very nice.

Quote: Once again, my tax dollars not working quite as hard as I do. Nah, tax dollars are irrelevant since the US Mint does not receive any appropriations. The US Mint actually makes an annual profit that is returned to the Treasury, FY2010 was $388 million.

biokemist6, that was a good point you brought up. I forgot that they were making a profit but I remember reading that.

First, I don't want to see them get rid of the cent! Second, I can envision it happening in my lifetime. Which is why I continue to save all the BU copper when I roll-search for wheats. I've also started tucking away sealed/unopened Brinks boxes. If my government ever does decide to get rid of the cent, I'm guessing that unopened bank boxes will sell at a very nice price eh?

Scotty, that's an idea I hadn't considered. But I have a hard time tucking the boxes away very long. I always wind up opening them to search through them.

But I have always managed to replace them. The way I see it, I've done dumber things with $25 in the past, and the boxes don't take up too much space tucked away on the floor in my closet.

interesting.....reminds me a bit of the issue that comes up every so often about how much the gov't would save if they discontinued printing paper dollars and we just used the coins....saying the avg life of paper is 18 months and coin is 30 yrs. They keep saying they would save millions of $$ a year but "the public won't use dollar coins." What they never seem to mention is that if we don't have a choice them we will use the coins.
I'm not a huge fan of losing the paper, btw, just sharing some stuff I've heard about over the past several years.

mdh157...you are right about the paper money. I think the reason they don't go to coins is the amount of government workers we wouldn't have to support. Scotty, I too am saving rolls upon rolls of pennies..mostly the very best.Have them sorted by decade and just stashing away.I'm really surprised at the amount of beautiful reds from the 60's that I'm finding..I'll bet in 30 years you won't see zincolns like that.
