Why is 2009 such a rare year?

2009P Nickels show 39,840,000, 2009D Nickels show 46,800,000
2009P Dimes show 96,500,000 and 2009D Dimes show 49,500,000
These numbers are much lower than previous years.

I'm glad I save them when I come across them. I have quite a few rolls of both nickels and dimes from 2009

I would be up to my neck in 2010 Dimes if I kept them all! No problem with those getting around here! I found the 2009 Nickel in change from the vending machine at work. I'm pretty sure that I got strange looks when I exclaimed "YES!" when I saw it!

Found "3" 09' dimes 2xd, 1xp, and"3" 09' nickels 3xd here in Missouri. Still no 09'p nickels in circulation and I do some roll searching. Quite a few 09' cents and quarters.

I don't much keep up with the newer nickel circulation numbers so I was not aware that the 2009 zombies were rarish until a week or so ago when reading a topic. So this morning while counting a pile of nickels I picked up the first zombie I saw and it was a 2009D lol. Ended up with 2 of them after looking through the pile.
I think the P will be the hard one for me to find since every coin around here (central California) is naturally a D.

I tell you what, I've been searching Nickels like a crazy man for some time now (6 months or so), trying to secure both P and D 2009 Jeffersons. At first, I was finding a fair amount of D's, and a couple P's even (which is rare in Kansas anyway).... BUT..... THEY HAVE C.O.M.P.L.E.T.E.L.Y DRIED UP AROUND HERE !I've been searching "bank wrapped"......"Customoer wrapped"....."Fed. Resv./String & Sons".....everything ! And I can find NOTHING now ! I think that the search for these '09 Jeffersons has become MORE popular than "Half searching for Silver". A roll of the P's is going for what $125.00 or so on ebay ? For a $2.00 roll.....that's pretty darn good ! This will be the future '50 D I'm assuming... This 2009 P Jefferson is already worth much more than a Silver War Nickel ! .... ..... All you need to do is give "roll searchers" a reason and a goal, and that O.C.D. kicks into TRIPLE OVERDRIVE ! (And now it's a "nation-wide" thing....) .... The secret is out.....folks know.....the search is hard.... ....

I don't search dimes, my boy does. (He has the eyes.) He's got several rolls of '09 P&D. I have 4 '09D rolls and a little over a roll of the Ps. I've found the box finds are nicer than most anything on the bay, as I've bought several and returned them all. \It ticks people off when you tell them so.
