Fair price = $90, Steal = $50
Looks EF+ to me and nowhere near the AU++ the seller claims. That and the scratches noted make it a no bid by most people. It's already at $74 with shipping so I'd let it go.

thanks for your input :) what I hate most about ebay is a lot of times the photos are not big enough nor are they clear. it is a good way to hide certain aspects of a coin.

Compare the ebay coin to the one below graded AU50 by PCGS. If there's anything I see, the coin shows less dirt than I normally see on AU FEs.

A 153 year old circulated cent with scratches but no signs of any contamination? Yes, it likely has been cleaned.

That would be my opinion as well. I disagree with you on the details grade - I believe it's AU and strongly-struck at that - but a coin this "clean" raises eyebrows. With that said, the seller isn't afraid to mention damage or cleaning if it's his opinion, and he *does* mention scratches on this one. I think it's going to go for stupid money anyways. This isn't the coin to bid on.

But you have to admit it is an exceptional FEC

I would say it's AU-50 details. Here's an obverse of my PCGS graded EF-45. It has a little more wear on the inner wing edge. It looks like a nice coin. I sold this FE for $100. It has a lamination error and has been cleaned too. it's in similar condition to the one you are looking at with a great strike. The only other difference is that mine had a spot on the back too which took away some value.

I just bought an 1857 last week from my local dealer for $67 and I would say it was about the same grade. In today's market I couldn't see paying the kind of money this ebay penny sold for. $90 seems like a fair price.

I know this isn't a 1857 but I gave like 50 bucks for this one when I started my 7070 album So unless you just want a 1857 for some reason you can find nice ones for pretty good deals in other dates

I'm with Super, AU55. I don't see any problems to note from the pictures. Bryan, that's a beauty for what you paid!

that is a beautiful 1858. I would rather have the much better grade '58 than the more expensive and less graded '57. what was that '58 graded anyway bryan?

I'd rather have the '58 too.......great looking coin and looks to be unadulterated. Had one like it many moons ago but sold it (yes, I am an idiot).

Bryan1315, That coin is over the top, maybe it should be in a slab. Those get really valuable in higher grades, I think you have something there. I'm sure I'm not saying anything you don't already know though.
