I'm not experienced enough in the ways of coin doctoring to know what's wrong with this coin.

Polishing? Whizzing? Thanks in advance.

"NO RETURNS"

If it's a genuine coin, why would you say that? I wouldn't bid under those conditions.

It looks as though he has over-graded coins & described them poorly before.
In my opinion, this is one to steer clear of due to "No Returns" and his feedback.

Judging by the rough surfaces, it might be a metal detector find that was harshly cleaned to remove ground debris. Of course, that would knock it right out of XF-AU condition

I agree it looks like it has been damaged by acid, either in the ground or since being dug up or else it was found on a beach and had been damaged by seawater and sand. Either way, it is NOT XF/AU

texasmick - the coin is certainly overgraded at the very best. The fields on a seated liberty half die are well executed and smooth. But I think that gxseries got it exactly right. That one looks like a counterfeit to me. There is possibly an "extra" line near the rim that follows the edge of the coin. Looks like a transfer mold that shrunk and they had to add a little to the diameter to make up for the shrinkage. The pictures are so poor it is hard to tell. But a cast transfer process would account for the awful surfaces. It could also mean that the seller is essentially "correct" when he says it is XF-AU. If it was recently made with these rough features in place the coin itself is actually Uncirculated (as cast). Anyone believe MS69?

I agree with swamperbob and gxseries it looks like a fake. One of the things that worries me is I have an example of this coin that is a lot more worn than this and yet you can still see the entire outline of the ribbon on the reverse. Where has the ribbon gone from under the e in UNITED
