So, gonna help my 5 year old start a collection of modern LMCs. The plan is to cull "keepers" from pocket change and the occasional rolls...keeping the "nicest" example of each mintage we find, and of course anything rare. Here's the question:

What do we do to the coins we keep? In other words, is there a proper process to carry out when putting the coins into the folder? Should anything be done to the coins prior to snapping them in place?

You could soak them in acetone (not nail polish remover) to remove any organics that are on the surface. Rinse in distilled water and pat dry. Then pop into the album using a clean soft cloth to push them in. That's what I do.

Do not let the point be lost on you.......... "Use a soft cloth to push them into the holes"..... DO NOT USE YOUR BARE FINGERS !
Only handle any coin by the edges.....never touch the "face" (obverse/reverse)

The oily residue (and other stuff) on your fingers will tarnish and permanently ruin your coins. Corrosion will begin to appear in time that will eat away at the surfaces. Any nice shiny higher grade coins that you have in the folder, will be decimated by the time he becomes an adult, if not well before then.

And store the folder in a "low humidity" environment if possible.........even use aluminum foil, or a large ziplock bag....some way to have a barrier of protection for something he'll have and cherish until he's 90 years old and will always remember who he put it together with.
