So yeah....I'm new to this. I've gone through 8 or 9 rolls of LMCs today and haven't found one single San Fran penny. Not one. Whats the deal with that? I'm on the east coast...does that make a difference? These are rolls we rolled over the years from pocket change, for what its worth....

The farther east you are the harder it is to get the S cents. San Fran is a long way from you. I'm in Missouri and still have a hard time finding them.

They are scarce in the midwest. I rarely find S mint cents.

A lot of it is just numbers. Since San Francisco only issued circulation memorial cents from 68 to 74, you only have 6 possible years out of 50. Each of those years had an issue of around a half billion, vs an average over the LMC life of about 3 to 5 billion for P and D mints yearly. So you have half a billion times 6 versus 3 billion times 97 ( no mint marks for 65, 66 or 67)Makes your odds pretty slim. Roughly one in a hundred.

Oh yeah, and all of that is not allowing for all of the copper hoarders removing pre 82 LMC's from circulation.

Is there any point in saving "S" minted cents? Do people do that? Sounds fun. I've heard this mentioned before, but never really thought too much about it.

schnauzer, people save almost anything..but yes, I pull them when I'm searching...mostly because they are hard to find and I can then give them to new collectors or whatever...my average is about ten S mints in every $50 bag searched.I actually average more wheats (20).

I'm on the east coast as well, and search rolls for varieties and such. I find more wheats then "S" lincolns here too. Most "D"s look like they traveled the hard road to get here as well.
I've read that the "S" mints were always the most likely to be hoarded, right off the press.

I usually get 5-15 per box here in the HoosierLand! I've had a little luck with some bags. My best was about 50 or so from a $50 bag. I like the "S" wheats better....!
