I got this coin asa prize on another forum. I thought to good to be true? Well I got it today and saw copper on the edge. ITs a little smaller than a regular ASE. Is it fake?

I posted the side of the coin. Its blurry but you can see what I'm talking about. Do ASE's get tarnished and you can see some copper? I looked at it in some better light and it looked pretty much normal

I have never seen any with copper not even in the reeds. I think it is because there isn't alot of copper in the coin so cant really see it. I can not tell by your pictures but if you can see a layer of copper in the reeds (like you see when looking at the reeds of a quarter) then something is definately strange or atleast something I have never seen

AHH THis is so confusing. ALl I can say is that I held it next to another ASE and the color of the edge looking different. Bryan, I dont see any layers, as if I was looking at a quarter.

Although it would be odd, perhaps the area you are seeing is the beginning of toning. I'm more concerned with the fact that you said it's a bit smaller than other SAE's or did you just think so until you compared it to the other ones you have?

laxmaster92 - I would love to see a clear picture or scan of the edge of the coin. There is a possibility that the coin is an off metal forgery (say a copper planchet with a silver foil covering meant to be encapsulated or for jewelry) - but it would likely bring as much or more from a forgery collector like myself because the die work is spectular.

Also I would also like to know about the size and weight of the coin.

Ir eally doubt its a fake becuase it came from a guy who is EXTREMELy knowledgeable on coins and owns a store. IT may have seemed a little smaller becuase the one I compared it to was in the littlelon plastic.

The one I compared it to looks silver any way you hold it. Even in horrible light. Now the 96' looks copper, but when held on an angle and brought into better light it looks pretty much silver. I cant get an exact weight though

I carried one around in my pocket as a good luck piece for a couple years, and it did start to tone a little.

Why can't ya weigh it? Just pop into your local dealer and ask if they'd do you a favor.

You shouldn't be seing any copper, it's mixed in with the silver and besides, there's barely any in there anyway. I'm with the others who think it's toning.

Congrats on winning a nice coin.
