Hi all!

Trying to find out if this is a large or small date 1970s. Looked at a few coin sites and still haven't decided for sure. Thought maybe one of the experts on here could get me a positive ID.

I'm still not that great at the really close up photos, so I'm sorry if these aren't good enough quality to make the call.

Guess I'll keep searching the coin jars for the small date. This is actually the first 1970s that I found. Was pretty happy just for that!

From what I had seen on the web sites, it is fairly difficult to tell the difference on these. What gave it away to you?

Look at the link I posted above. There are some really good diagnostics listed there.

The 7 is higher on the small date, the zero is more rounded and there is a crease in the 7 of the large date. After you see a couple/few they just jump out at you.

you're asking a lot....I've now gone through about 14 rolls and haven't found a single "S" cent from ANY year....lol..still leaning toward the "S" coins being a myth the experienced folks perpetuate to make us noobs go crazy. The coin version od snipe hunting.....

This question comes up MUCH MORE than you would think, I was told there are PLENTY of pup's, (pick-up points)Already, to attribute this coin by an "expert"!
I would offer one diagnostic attribute I have found to be a FACT, and have not found stated any where else before, The small date, the 9 is pointed on both ends, the large date, has a top end which is flat or blunt......PS, Check this out on other sites for your self....Good luck.

Good "point" - LOL.

I remember you mentioning that before, and you're right. It also points more toward the 7 than mintmark like the Large date does also.

i think its eazier to look at the bottom of the 7 then the top

On the small dates the bottom of the seven is even with the 0
on the large dates it hangs lower

take a look and see.

i just found a 70-s large date MS coin bright and almost flawless, except its a weak strike
I get excited when I find ant S mark 68-74 with the 68 69 double dies, the 70 large small date and
they are very worth searching for

Like Scooby says, once you see the small date,it is pretty easy, but finding one is a different story. I have found 3 in about 40 years..and two of them were found in the early 70's when I first learned about the.
