Looking to buy an ASE a year for my daughter who was born this past July, as my grandfather did for me since I was born. I wanted to know if there's much of a difference in value from a PCGS MS69 that a dealer was asking $35 to a First Strike PCGS MS70 that he was asking $90. He swore up and down how much of a better value the First Strike is. Is there any truth to what he was saying?

I've never bought slabbed coins but I figured paying $35 (MS69) as opposed to a raw for $30 would be worth it. Then he showed me the First Strike (MS70) and I wanted to know if that would be a better buy for the extra $60.

First Strike is a marketing term, don't place any value on it. I would go with the 69, although there are people who are adamant about having 70's. (Especially the Registry set addicts).

"To buy or not to buy? That is the question!" Sorry for the dramatics. Here's the Pop report (the program will not let me space the number directly beneath each category):

Quote:
PCGS Price Guide 63 64 65 66 67 68 69 70
2010 $1 Eagle 32 32 32 32 32 32 44 80
PCGS Pop Report 63 64 65 66 67 68 69 70
2010 $1 Eagle 0 1 0 4 17 107 22,720 69,414
2010 $1 Eagle + 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

As you can see, even PCGS has the MS-70s at only $80 and there are almost seventy thousand of them out there. Another thing, we don't know, right now, how many millions, that's right, millions were minted last year. Since starting the Silver eagle program in 1986, January of 2010 is the highest month in sales of the uncirculated Silver eagles. By January 22nd, the U.S. Mint had sold over three million 2010 Uncirculated Silver Eagles. Even the Proof Eagle has the second highest mintage of any Proof Eagle issued.

Would I pay those prices, no. I'd wait to see where they level out. I think I only paid $25 for my 2010 ASEs. The Proofs were $44.
Remember to buy the coin, not the holder. It probably cost him at least 25 bucks to get that graded. He's adding that to the price of bullion.

If you want the MS-70 one for your little girl, I completely understand. I Still think it's too high but if you want the best and want to continue the MS-70 set for her, try haggling. also remember that if you decide to go back and get all the past MS-70 Eagle, it'll be expensive.

Thank you. I'm just looking to continue a tradition, so it seems the $35 will be the way to go.

All the ones from my grandfather are raw, I personally don't have a preference. It was just the idea of it I'm going for.

I would take the 69 anyday. Personally, I can't tell the difference between a 69 and a 70. The "first strike" is just what wheatguy says. All it means is that people got their submissions postmarked within so many days of it's release.

It's kind of misleading. Makes you believe you are getting the first strike of new dies, but not necessarily true. It is conceivable for someone to send in the last coin of that set of dies in late die state and the next day they hang new dies and mint what truly is a "first strike" of a new set of dies. Just a marketing ploy not worth it's weight in the label.

I always thought those "First Strike" were marketing gimmicks, never have one and probably never going to buy one either, but I do prefer proof over bullion.

Some dealers hire a person to get a job at the Mint and stand right there as a coin is produced. They then take it and send it to their real bosses so they can say it is a First Strike.
Possibly some dealers just take any coin and hit it with a hammer. If they are the first ones that did that, then it is now a First Strike coin.
Any of the preceding is just as possible as whoever says they have those First Strike coins.

I always thought "First Strike" had something to do with Nukes.
