Things have changed in US grading since I was a kid and I was hoping I might get an opinion of this coin. I hope the pics are good enough.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you both for your input! I'm afraid I just can't get the colors right - Probably took 12 photos just to get those - and up close and personal, it has a nice even coloring. If it has been cleaned, it was over 40 years ago before my dad got it.

The color is excellent.

Keep in mind, folks, as soft as gold is, you can practically swipe your finger across it and leave hairlines. I'm posting from my Droid, and can't see the coin perfectly, but one can expect pretty "busy" fields on XF-AU gold. Below that, wear tends to even out the fields. It would take 10 years of circulation for a Morgan to look like this, but maybe 5 years or less for gold.

Another point: many of the things which would lead to a silver coin being brushed simply wouldn't happen to gold, which does not tarnish. Nor do I see dirt in the nooks and crannies, which would be the other reason. Even from a cellphone, I'm inclined to believe it's honest wear.

Wear actually looks AU-53. XF-45 seems reasonable given the excessive surface chatter.

I agree with Super Dave that it doesn't look cleaned, and agree with shadow on XF-45, though I think it would easily push 50 if there was a tad more luster.

Looks like a cleaned AU50 from here. You are going a touch bright with the lighting. I like your gold pieces though!

Johnny54321 .... Thank you for taking the time to offer your expertise. You and the other kind folks have made my job a lot easier. I only have 7 more of the gold that I hope you folks don't mind looking over. Then I'll go back to the British Forum for a while and give it a rest here. There are a lot of American classic coins that I will have to deal with, but they are not nearly as daunting as these are to me. And then the Asian and the rest of the world. Dad did like to collect things.

bherring1964 .... Thanks, I will try to back on on the lighting! I don't do too badly with silver since a flatware dealer friend told me about using a gray background some years ago. Never have gotten a handle on working with gold or gilt, though.

First thought was EF-45, glad to see my hunch was (somewhat) right.

With the amount of chatter I was leaning towards VF-35. After reading the other posts XF-40.

Well, I'm not sure what the exact verdict is on this one but the initial report from NGC is "AU Details - Bent".

Does anyone know if this means that there will still be an AU grade (#) or just that 'it would grade out to AU, if ..... ?

It will just state it as AU. Too bad about the bend, but it's nice to have 1 that has AU details.

johnny54321 - I'll have to check and see if I can see the 'bend'. I can't say I noticed it when I was photographing though it may have been that slight. Oh well, it's still pretty! All in all, of the 12 I sent in (and with the help of the good folks here on the forum), the results came out quite well. At least I learned enough to not be surprised by the 'experience'. I hope there is something more I put up that you can chime in on.

Sometimes they just do it because of the wear pattern...
