Grades/Opinions? This was sitting in a stack of Morgans underneath the counter. All of them except for this one and an 1896 I also picked up were 1921's. $40 for the pair PLUS that good old 8.75% CA sales tax. The 1896 appears to be somewhere in the G range. I put this one at XF45? At first I thought it might have been cleaned but under the loupe they don't appear to be cleaning marks. In hand it still has some luster though not strong.

Detail wise it looks EF-40, but with those scratches I'm going to say VF-35.

XF-45 details, looks to have a little remaining luster.

I will say XF detail, lightly cleaned. VF35 is a reasonable net grade for valuation.

they had Morgans for $20 each and you only bought two? They melt for $25 right now.

Thanks guys for the grading. Guess I wasn't toooo far off in my estimation. Guess I coulda picked up more at that price but I only got these two as they're years I didn't have yet. Anything else would just be for re-sale down the road sometime. They did have an 1882 CC sitting off by itself in a mylar for $149. Probably close to AU but at first glance looked like it had probably been cleaned. They also had a junk box full of coppers all for $1 each. Looked to be 100-150 coins in there. Wish I knew something about coppers.

Here's the 2nd pawn shop coin. After looking at it more, I'd put it at AG-03 ? Looks like it might have been another victim of granma's lye soap. Lotsa "character" though. Poor little thing is down to 25 grams. Lightened up the reverse a bit for detail.

Nice pickups under melt value too! Curious do you have pay tax on coins all time? Here in Iowa no sales tax on coins. Unless some places do some don't I guess but pretty sure I haven't anywhere yet even antique shop in town.

Re taxes....if I buy a coin anywhere in CA it will be taxed unless it's a private transaction of course. One bought off the internet will also be taxed at CA rates if the seller has a physical presence in CA, i.e. Heritage Auctions. They're located out of state but they've also got a presence in CA. Any ebay seller in CA is legally obligated to charge me as a CA resident sales tax. The same seller selling to almost any other state will not charge any tax. Don't think things are going to improve for a long time.
