Just for fun I piled on as well and asked the seller for a detailed photo that shows the alleged overdate.

We'll see what he/she says .....

If it's real, then it will only help the seller to post better pics. If not real, then bidders will be helped as they can bid accordingly.

Exactly, either way, 1888 or 1888/7, at least potential bidders will know for sure. But with these blurry pics and no return policy, this sale is DOA (hopefully)

I looked through his feedback, (all positive the past few months), and noticed this is the only coin I'm seeing in his selling history. Mostly funky jewelry, knick-knacks, etc.

It'll be interesting to see if better pics show up. Those are AWFUL. I think he took them with Fred Flintstones camera.

Well, the seller messaged me back saying that they had posted additional pictures. Those pictures are just as bad as the original ones. I did reply stating that collectors want high quality and clear pictures before they will be willing to consider purchasing a coin, especially with one that is rare and expensive.

Picayune, MS is on the wrong side of the state line for me. They have this weird thing about Jews driving in Mississippi... We call it "DWJ" or "Driving While Jewish". It's rarely worth tempting fate.

Besides... If you look at the sellers other auctions in the last month, you'll find this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...t_500wt_1156

If he/she can photograph earrings that well... One can only presume that there's a lot about that coin that someone doesn't want you to see.

Oh well, he will never get a sale with those pictures. Eventually, he will figure it out after wasting all that time listing the coin over and over and it never gets bids.

Just to keep people updated, the seller responded again and said that he doesn't usually deal with coins, but is selling it for a friend. He said he's tired to get good pictures, but they just aren't coming out, he also wanted to let me know that you can clearly see the "7." Anyways, I don't think it is his camera as those other pics of the earrings seemed pretty good, I do think there is something the seller doesn't want you to see.

Perhaps he's hoping "inexperience" and ambiguity will pay off, where bidders rush in to rob him blind--such lines must be as old as history itself.

Maybe I shouldn't dismiss him too harshly--it may well be this rare 1888/7:

Your all missing the seller's real intent here. Those are not in fact blurry, out of focus pictures. They are really clear. It's the coin that is blurry. See he just didn't explain that he was selling a Mint Error coin that is just blurry.
Further I suspect he would only take blurry money for that coin so unless you have bblluuurrryyyy money, you'll never be able to buy that coin anyway.

DV, that's hilarious. Looks like my 18/7-D 5C!

I had to pass that photo on--it really made my day the first time.

If that replica "overdate" suggests anything--it's that collectors may be looking for something obvious on the 1888/7. Granted, it's not as subtle as the FE 1858/7, but the 7's tail protruding from the 8 is about it. I've seen a lot of "Snow-1" on eBay--all confusing damage with the overdate; they're not even RPDs.

Yeah, I know. I will wager someone can very well have one in their IHC set, and not even know it, unless they know what to look for. Its a very rare variety. Someday :-)
