The quarter had another coin pressed into it and I believe the second one is a Shield nickel

The AW is the designer initials- Adolph Weinman.

Those designer initials on the half are at about 4 o'clock. Look across about 8 o'clock for the letter D mintmark.
If you have one there, this becomes much more than a 1938 Walking Liberty half dollar.
A 1938 D is a key date to complete this series.
