I have a few questions:

1. If someone is a member at PCGS, can they check for PCGS's archived photos of any certified coin?

2. What is the best way to tell if a slabbed coin is fake?

3. Does PCGS slab AND grade (even in low grades like G(06)) early copper coins (like a 1793 Wreath Cent) with MILD corrosion or SLIGHT problems--or do they maintain their typical strict standards?

Thanks.

question 1: there is no photos of every coin PCGS has graded unless the person who submitted the coin paid for the photograph service.
question 2: There is no good way to tell, you just have to teach yourself what a real one looks like and then look for differences. You can look up certification numbers on PCGS website but thats not fool proof either because the counterfeiters have learned to use real numbers on the label. The best way I have learned is to search around for any coin with the same date and grade on Heritage or other sites and if it has sold there make sure it looks like the same coin
question 3: if a coin has a problem PCGS will not put a grade on the label like ANACS does and then just list the problem, they will just put it in a Genuine slab. I don't think they falter either way from their standards

Bryan,

Thanks for your response. I will look into sales. I know that PCGS does give their scarlet letter like "Genuine" accreditation to problem coins. I do have a 1795 Half Dime slabbed as a "problem free" F(12)despite having two small scratches on the reverse. I was told that PCGS is sometimes a little lenient with draped bust and flowing hair type coins given their age and smaller populations of problem free coins.

Thanks again.

Best,
Adam

some scratches will not stop a coin from grading, but if they are put there intentionally and they are big enough to catch the eye and make it not market acceptable then chances of it getting graded as problem free is slim by any of the BIG 3 TPG's
