It appears to have been heated, causing the zinc core to partially melt. The melting point of zinc is just under 800F while the melting point of copper is almost 2000F.

i was gonna say someone probably was just having fun and tried melting it. everyone at one point in time probably tried to alter a coins appearance.

Or a real coin but a commemorative of who could or would have been the President if Lincoln Lost the election.  Might be a little Gremlin next to Lincoln's face made by the Gremlin Mint.  In an Astronots pocket when re-entering our atmoshere.  An attempt at the Fermi Labs to make Copper/Zinc into Gold.

It looks like a penny from chemistry class...made some very artistic looking pennies with a strong flame. Some of my favorites were heated enough to melt the zinc, then flattened so it gushed evenly from all sides making it look kind of like the sun with zinc color rays coming out of a super thing penny...
