Is it me or is this a weird "S" for a 1878?

Bryan, thats what I thought. An upside down "S" like on the Jefferson nickels. WEIRD! The coin is not mine so I cant photo it. I think Gene is on the right track though. Could be the die brake wreath VAM46A. Scroll all the way down to the full pics at the bottom of the VW listing. The "S" on the last one shown is funky too. nlp

I just checked the Encyclopedia and didn't find any mention of multiple "S's" for 1878. I find it hard to believe nobody has noticed this before. It stuck out like a sore thumb to me, even on VW site where the last two coins pictured are exceptionally good shots. nlp

something close to this?I think some of it may be the camera angle on his picture, I'll have an idea, but need more if he can get some closeups...and an obverse photo, though it may not be needed..

yes Noel the 46A is what I was thinking, Broken R, engraved wing and broken D in dollar, I did notice the possible break at the wreath, notice VAM world posts,,,2 pictures, one with a slight(EDS)) break and one with a big brake, , post some pics or let us know what you find...

its not worn, its the photo angle,, the 4 Points of conclusive attribution are the broken R,,the engraved feather
(most are known by this for this coin.and they're variance. the broken D in dollar. and the mint mark ...as the OBVERSE is not shown we can also know that the 4th star is broken...one minor point in the overall attribution...
