Hard for me to tell, just getting the hang of it and its an old coin. Been looking for the splits in the corners and serifs, still having some trouble differentiating the light doubling and normal wear/damage/MD's. Pics are bad, as usual, lol. but thought maybe some of the pros could see what I am not? Mainly looking at the "R" and "D", everything else looks like MD to me?

First off, from the pictures it looks like a Wheat cent and I am unaware of any double die reverses from 1909-1958. I am sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong.

Also, in my opinion, you are wasting your time looking for doubling on a coin as worn as that. My suggestion is to find a copy of The CherryPickers Guide and brush up on which dates are already known to have doubling. In 09-58 Wheaties you are looking for DDOs and RPMs.

But to answer your question: No there is no doubling there.

1. Just because you are unaware of them doesn't make them non-existent. I have 136 Wheat cent doubled die reverses listed on my site, and I know I'm nowhere near close to 'finished.'

2. I agree with wasting your time looking on very worn coins...but I don't see how anyone can tell how much wear is on that coin by the images alone.

3. The CherryPickers' Guide lists about 5% of all the doubled dies that are known...so it's a bad example to use to 'brush up on which dates are already known to have doubling.'

4. Furthermore, it's not good to tell people to only look for what's known - they'll never discover anything new that way. All die varieties were discovered at one time, and it wasn't by people who only look in certain places for what's "known".

5. There's no way anyone can tell whether there is doubling on that coin based on the images provided.

Thnks, I have a list of known coin years that I use when sorting through coins, but I breifly go over every coin, just in case. I know the ones in poor shape are worthless, but to a newb it would still be exciting to find something regardless of value. I just ordered a microscope with camera, so hopefully this will help me some and I can quit posting horrible pics in hope that you guys see something I am not, lol

Problem with a 'list of known coin years' is simply that you will miss something that could be a big find some day just because you are out of the habit of looking through everything. That's not a good habit to start.

A board member here discovered a VERY nice 1982 doubled die reverse cent once because he searched everything. Anyone with a list would tell you they just toss 1982 cents because there's "nothing on them" - his $1000+ discovery proved that theory wrong.

While I totally agree, I also think it is great for a novice to start with known varieties. With known varieties there is usually a wealth of information to properly ID them. I also think that once you find some of the more common known varieties, you get a little better at knowing what to look for. Before I found first RPM, I thought EVERYTHING was re-punched.
