I was reading an artical in " Coin World Online" and read: As far as the possible elimination of the Sacagawea dollar, Lebryk noted that North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan's efforts led to Congress preserving the Sacagawea dollar in the Presidential dollar legislation. The act calls for one-third of the dollar coins issued by the United States Mint, beginning in 2007, to be Sacagawea dollars Im just wondering what the demand for the Sacagawea dollars will be, knowing there will be less minted. Any thoughts?

They are currently being minted only for collectors, right?
I would think there might be some demand due to low mintage.
Of course as we all know, the metal dollar with never circulate until the paper dollar is done away with.

I would believe the demand would be greater, just based upon the anticipation of there being less minted, as far as I am concerned no. But I am sure I will still collect them as long as they are not hyper inflated as some one will most likely make them.

How many coins would need to be made if they did away with the one dollar bills? My guess would be in the trillions. So is North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan's perposed act mean that for every two President dollars made there will need to be one Sacagawea dollar made? If the series of US Presidents proves popular than there are going to be a lot of Sacagawea dollar around.

Hi all. Are these Presidential dollars being made for circulation or are they just for collectors? Why do we even need the dollar coin if not just for collecting? Don't see any use for them except to get strange looks when you use one. Wouldn't bother me one bit if they get rid of the sacs.

A complete set of Sackies right now is one of the best investments I have seen in a modern day coin in only 6 years. I only regret not starting about a dozen albums when I had the chance. Now the proofs are very pricey, especially the 2001 and one thing is for certain...there can be no more complete sets than the proofs struck in any of the 6 years. Personally I want the Sacagawea kept alive but do know there is a movement in Congress at this time to drop the Sackie while the politician dollars are being struck. Given a choice I would take the Sackie over a dead President any day!!!

I dont understand why people say they are being minted for collectors only because I just took my grandfather to his bank yesterday and he bought 5 rools of 2006 Sacagawea dollars at face value. I dont know how and I haven't tried to do so myself but I know he did it yesterday

Hi all, My understanding is the Presidential dollars are for circulation just as the 50 states quarters... which brings to mind three points: 1. They will be in the mint sets and proof sets in all their variations (unc and proof, clad and silver?)and probably a standalone annual set (unc and proof, clad and silver))like the qtrs 2. The usmint's thinkers probably are hoping that a feeding frenzy similar to the states quarters will develop, thereby increasing the demand for their product.Of course the seignorage on all those coins make them tons of money! 3. And as I saw previously mentioned, tons of sacs will be made to sit around in vaults, jars and drawers. We can always count on the usmint to proliferate...their marketers are on a roll...Is there anyone out there with the time to calculate what it would cost to buy one of each of their products this year? Best regards to all, Dennis

The cost of the proof sets is going to go thru the roof as new packaging is already being developed. The whole program is nothing more than a bunch of politicians patting themselves on the back. It reeks!

I did this exercise for all the Australian coins released in 2004.For All Non Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) coins from the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint including Gold, Silver and Platinum coins the grand total was $37,067.15 Which proves you have to be selective in what you collect. If you drop the GOLD, PLATINUM and SILVER BULLION coins the price is reduced to under $2000.

Personally I hope millions of folks climb on the Presidential dollar band wagon which will virtually kill any after market value. And, while they are busy hoarding the new Presidential dollars, I will be content to grab up the Sackies. Sets of nice mint state Sackies, along with the proofs, will be a very very wise holding and worth collecting. My only regrets, at this time, is selling off all those 2001S proofs I used to own! What a mistake!

I wouldn't mind collecting them either just to have a set in my collection. Maybe a set of proofs like the State Quarter proofs would be sufficient. I'm also holding onto my SAC's...especially now since reading this thread.

I sure hope not OldDan...some of the First Ladies weren't too good to look at either!
