Update:

Picked up my 10 at the Mint. Great looking coins. Most likely will keep 2 or 3 for the kids, and give the rest away to the relatives during christmas and what not.

I was charged Tax in Manitoba. I think they said something about taxes on collectibles, and since this is technically a collectible coin, and not bullion, pst was applied. Not sure how it differs from province to province though.

> I think this also resurrected a 20-year old debate regarding the "Legal Tender" aspect of NCLT. I thought this was settled but apparently not.

I think the RCM has done that with the wording of their offer:

"Exchange $20 for a $20 pure silver (99.99%) coin
...
This new Canadian silver commemorative coin is legal tender with a value of $20. It is available for the official price of only $20. You simply exchange $20 from your wallet for a $20 coin of pure 99.99% silver."

I don't recall them, with other NCLT, emphasising the legal tender nature, using the term "value" or pushing the concept of an exchange of legal tender.

Pictures delivered! Can't really do it justice though, I'll have to get out my photo stuff at a different time and take better pictures!

If you ever get a chance to visit the mint here in the peg, it might be worth checking out. Have some nice stuff, and the tour is about 3 bucks or something.

While there, A tour did just end, and I ended up causing a bit of a commotion as people were wondering why I was buying up these coins. I pretty much told them I was exchanigng paper money for silver, and something about silver increasing in price, and a bunch of them were asking the poor girl at the front for more! She went to the back to check, but I didn't want to stick around for that :P Apparently I was the 6th person or so that day to pick them up, so I'm sure they're out there now!

anyways. pics!

Can anyone tell me what the tab is for? I lifted a lil bit of it up, but its just white underneath?

So thats it.. I guess living in the frozen tundra of the praries has some benefits :)

Thanks Vinny! This is an awesome coin indeed.

PS: looks more like a reverse proof than a specimen. Again, the heavy grit blast is apparent in the background.

@ coinsoldier, I'd be surprised if they were to stay high seeing you can get it for face value, unless the demand is from abroad.

@ canadian coins: I noticed the "grit" blasing as well. Not sure how I feel about it. it gives it an interesting lookbut I imagine it would collect more dirt if it were circulated? I prefer the shiny parts, but the texture is growing on me.

I can't really comment on the thickness with the case on it.. but I'm guess close to a loonie?

Thanks Vinny.

So far the coins has received an average 4/5 rating on the Mint's web site. Low scores for the "not so legal tender" and high scores for the "good deal".

Ok, now I see what makes this a collectors' item and not bullion. Still, can't anyone see what a clever scam this is? Stamp something with a number and magically it's worth that amount. What. Ever.

Libertad, that's what government can do, have done and will continue to do: print money. ...Until there is a radical change in our society. Moreover, the physical "cash" or circulation "worth" accounts for a very small fraction of what government "print" every day (particularly in the US).

So at least, this silver coin has an intrinsic value... And in that regard, your checkbook then is a bigger scam (if you use checks).

Coin collectors from all over the world collect Canadian coins. I have sold to buyers in over 50 different countries. This coin is popular. There is another on ebay auction going in 3 hours and it is already at $46.50 If I can sell 30 or 40 for $30.00 plus I will be happy with 50% return.

What does "Authorized by the Government of Canada" mean? I know the government approves every coin design the mint makes.
