I find it interesting. I do not really have much to add other than envy. Never heard of Schaumberg-Lippe. Lippe I know, as I have spent time in Detmold. German coins are so interesting (and expensive, as the Germans like collecting and model railways more than anything else in the world, other than beer and big slabs of meat)

Hi - thanks for that - I'll keep going. Unfortunately you are right - they are expensive - that last one was embarrasingly so - I can't tell my wife just how much :) It is however all funded by my selling old rubbish on ebay - so I'm managed to do all this so far without really spending anything - but there has been a lot of hard work. I really like these coins - they are substancial hunks of silver and have a lot of history associated with them. all the best ..

Schaumburg-Lippe used to be a state of the German Empire. After the end of that empire it joined the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen); the area is now part of Schaumburg county. Lippe (next door so to say) is a county in the neighboring state of North Rhine Westphalia. As for the beer-and-meat stuff, that seems to be somewhere between rumor, truth and stereotypes. ;) As for model railways, well, if you ever go to Hamburg, make sure you see Miniatur Wunderland. But I digress ...
Bacchus2, I realize that this topic looks like a monolog, but I do enjoy seeing such a theme project grow. So unless taking the photos gets too time consuming for you, please continue to post your "Frankfurt 1863" related acquisitions!

Another acquisition - not quite for the grid - but it's of a similar age and size I got it for $70 + some IT work I did for a dealer - so I think it was a good deal. Louis XVIII 1821 5 Francs Ob. LOUIS XVIII ROI DE FRANCE Rev. 5 F Ed. DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM Silver 0.9000 25g

Hey Bacchus- This thread is VERY appretiated. I love the old german Thalers and do not have the money to put into it, but I can enjoy seeing them here, and learning. I spent 8 1/2 years working in Germany and traveled alot. I did not have much money or info, so not much coin collecting other than euros.
Now, I am starting to get a few coins. I received a beautiful 3 mark Prussian coin from another CCF member: thanks Christian!

Hi, Thanks for the support - I'll certainly keep going. I'm hoping the thread will really be about that particular photo and the associated coins - but undoubtedly the odd peripheral one will creep in. And I can't afford them either :) -- so I'm really ringfencing funds I raise through selling old stuff on ebay, and a few other sources. It's really hard work - but I think it makes me appreciate them more. There is something very satisfying about these coins - not just the German ones but all the large silver crowns of the time. It's kind of a pity that everyone else thinks so too - hence the high prices. I did buy another one recently - but don't have it in hand yet - another peripheral one - but quite nice I think. I'll post it when I get it. The one question I really have that I don't know the answer to is how many of those Lichtenstein thaler restrikes were made. I've even Googled the minters but I think they have been taken over by a bank. I might e-mail the bank just to see if they know anything. Glad people are enjoying the thread :) Malcolm

Just to offer my praise and encouragement. It's a wonderful project/thread/website. Can't offer any insights but I'm certainly learning a lot from it. More power to your elbow and more pennies to your purse.

Wow Bacchus, that picture and your collection thread is very interesting, I also collect German coins, specifically the German States - up to 1915 the silver 5 marks in VF-EF only Progress is slow as the price is a little bit stiff, but highly satisfying. Only got 5 as of now, the Bavaria, Prussia, Hamburg, Wurttemberg, & Saxony but we're basically on the same thread, keep up your posts Bacchus & good luck on your coin hunting!

A new purchase - not really in keeping with the "project" - though another one there is on it's way - a beauty too... I got this one purely on the price, even though it's quite worn (it was £40). Again it's not a scarce coin but it is an expensive coin to get in higher grades. It fits in with tce "crowns from European Royalty" which I guess is a longer term project I have in the back of my mind for once the Frankfurt project is ended. If anyone can help me with the bust type it would be appreciated - I don't have very good references for this period other than the Krause. I think it's the third bust btw. William III 1696 1 crown Ob. GVLIELMVS III DEI GRA Rev. MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX Edge: Regnal year in words (I think)

Another space on the grid filled ... sort of ... Leopold IV 1870 1 Thaler Ob. LEOPOLD FRIEDRICH HERZOG VON ANHALT Rev. HERZOGTHUM ANHALT GETHEILT 1603 VEREINT 1863 EIN THALER 30 EIN PF.F. Edge: GOTT SEGNE ANHALT Silver 0.9000 Weight: 18.52g, 33mm mintage: 50,000 Mint: Berlin This coin is of Leopold who sent his son to the congress instead of attending himself. As Frederich issued neither a thaler nor a 3-Mark coin I have had to use this image to fill the spaces for both his father and himself. (He did issue 2-Mark and 5-Mark coins, but they are very expensive) -- I actually think my website host is haveing a few issues at the moment, at least I can't connect. thanks for looking.. Malcolm

Another coin added to the general theme - just a common Bavaria 3 Mark - but it does have another "rulers" image on it. This time the Prince Regent Luitpold - who was the nominal ruler of the Kingdom due to the mental incapacity of both Ludwig II and Otto.

Another crown sized addition. Not German but French - of Louis Philippe. It shows some wear on the face but it wasn't an expensive coin and it fits in well with the general time period. I hope to get a proper addition to the "photograph" next time.
