I fell in love with this coin. I think it is EF/AU but I'm no expert. I dont have a book on british coins so how much is it worth? I was planning to purchase it but I dont know how much its worth. Does anyone here have a book with prices on a 1849 florin in EF/AU condition. Any help is much appreciated, thanks. From checking out other pictures of this coin, I dont think its fake but I dont know. Thanks again.

Ah yes, the famous 1849 "Godless Florin".

The 2004 19th Century Krause catalogues it at US$125 in EF, US$350 in Unc.

Very nice. One of my favorite if not my most favorite coin of all time. Sap is right on the price as well. If you can afford it I would get it. I don't see many in this condition come up on ebay much, they are usually pretty worn examples at best.

thank you very much everyone,.. the guy wants 240 + 16.00 in S&H. I'm going to think about this for a couple of days. About what size is this? Half-dollar size? I dont have a book yet and the coins are never beside other coins so I have no reference. Thanks everyone.

They weigh 11.3 grams and are 28 millimetres in diameter. That's about the size of a Kennedy half dollar. A Kennedy half is 30.6 millimetres in diameter.

Is he negotiable? You could always haggle if you think he is. $240 seems a little steep but then again I haven't seen many of these come up in this grade since I have been following them. Maybe Sap or someone who knows the prices a little better can chime in for you in time. Hopefully he doesn't have a time constraint on your decision.

Hmm, US$256 does sound a bit steep. Still, if you want it, buy it. I paid AU$142 for mine back in 2001, and it's slightly lower grade; the local dealer I bought it off graded it "gVF+" - probably about EF-45 on the American scale; the wear on Vicky's hair is more noticeable on mine than on this one.

I normally don't pay that much for modern British coins (it's not one of main collecting interests) - I mainly wanted an example for the fascinating background story the coin has.

So I take it he didn't want to negotiate on the price?

I see it on ebay and he has no bids on it so maybe he will negotiate a price with you on it. Good Luck

Meiji03, I was attracted to the coin the instant I saw it.

Unfortunately, I don't have that much to spend for a single coin.
