I don't believe this coin was worth the $358 US dollars it sold for..Then again, I don't know anything about pieces of eight, other than the fact that I want at least one in my collection :)

Are 1755 (Mexico) issues scarce compared to 8 reales from other years, or countries for that matter? Is $358 close to FMV?

Thank you,

The Pillar series of 8R coins is generally underpriced in Krause and most references. I think the price is FULL market value and is fair since it was set in open competition.

The two things this coin really has going for it are (1) that it is REAL something not seen too often on ebay these days and (2) the seller is trustworthy.

In this grade any Pillar 8R should bring at least $300 NEVER less, remember that bargains usually are NOT bargains - but rather FAKES or damaged coins.

You ask if this is a RARE date - the simple answer is NOT AT ALL. It is in fact very common - but common in the sense of a Pillar coin would be rather rare in many other series where there are many more collectors.

As a follow up to Swamperbob's comments... original undamaged XF and higher Pillar Dollars are becoming harder and harder to find. I think this was a fair price and the coin is actually a beautiful well truck example of a 1755 Pillar. Well struck pieces dated before 1761 are not as easy to find as the out of touch prices in the guides would indicate. In 1761 the design and engraving of the globes was redone and the coins dated 1761-1771 are much easier to find in clear sharp XF condition, though still not common by any stretch of the imagination.

I think $358 was a reasonable price if indeed XF
Usually sell between $300 and $400 at this grade.

A quality 8R from a reputable seller will always attract active bidding. With so many fakes it's important to pay a little more for the peace of mind. Very nice coin and well worth the $385.00.
