Pre-82 cents(and many Canadian cents)now worth 3 cents in metal value. Looks like the industrial metals are beginning to move again.

KoinKid:

You can always sell your 82 and earlier copper cents on ebay. I understand most are getting about 1.4 to 1.8 cents apiece for them. (seems to be the average).

As far as getting near full value (nearly 3 cents apiece right now), that will not be possible until the U.S. government rescinds its' ban on their melting.

That should be relatively soon, as with the cost of making the cent @ approx 1.79 cents apiece, and the metal value @ nearly 3 cents - our bankrupt government must eventually get around to addressing the issue.

Meanwhile - gather now while the gathering is good...

Is it illegal to melt Canadian coins in the United States the same as it is for American coins. Since it is foreign currency I think it would be legal. If so whee would you look to sell older Canadian Copper Coins?

Koinkid, I sell $100 FV at a time one ebay.Smaller amounts don't sell very well.I just put a batch on this morning.
nateb20, you can sell them even if they are not being melted.People are betting on the melt ban being lifted at some point in the future...just like silver and gold coins.

how much does shipping cost for you to send 100 dollars face value in pennies? that is quite heavy, i'd think it would be expensive to ship that.

$100 FV in pennies is around 68 pounds I believe and would still be eligible to be shipped in a large priority flat rate box. I think Large FR priority boxes shipped for $14 dollars roughly.

I'm counting on being able to point to a stack of copper cents and say there's X amount of copper there. Because they are in the form of US cents, the composition and purity level is known and trusted. I never want to melt them.

So when our fiat money system collapses, I have a known quantity that I'm using to store my wealth. (Of course I'm using the term "wealth" loosely, otherwise I'd be putting money into gold, silver and land.)

The US postal system also loses money hand over foot. I wouldn't say they always make smart discussions lol.

Well, I'll say the US postal system is great at doing it's logistic job. Packages are rarely lost and they usually arrive quickly.

Besides that they do a poor job managing costs and general operations. They should get rid of media mail, it's abused badly by ebay sellers, and costs the system tons of money. The wy they handle personal and costs is terrible. I don't know how much longer we'll have a national postal system, I see the government giving it up to the private sector if this goes on much longer.
