Sorry for the large file but does this appear to you as double date? Held in hand under a loupe it looks like it to me but I'm no expert. Maybe just part of the toning. Thanks...

I really cannot tell from your photos. However, I notice that your coin has heavy peripheral toning and with that, you will sometimes see a "shadow doubling" effect on the date and stars. The "doubling" is not really doubling at all, it is just an area that toned differently(or not at all) due to radial metal flow around the devices.

As an aside, this "shadow doubling" can be used as a rough diagnostic for genuine toning on Morgans. It is not present on all coins with toning but I have never seen an AT coin with this effect. This can be seen easily while color progressions and determining whether the toning is "on the coin or in the coin" can be much more difficult to master.

Thanks for that info biokemist6. That's good to know about. This 2nd foto would seem to support your diagnosis. I can see the same sort of thing on the stars also.

I was not discussing the VAM at all and did not attempt to attribute it. My interest was in the date and determining whether it was real doubling or a shadow effect from the toning. The closeup pic confirmed that it was indeed caused by the toning and not a doubled die or RPD.

Nice toning... shadow doubling is the right call. Have seen this a lot on toned silver, not sure what causes it?
Does anybody have any theories?
