I had this Dollar graded by PCGS and though it would go a bit higher than it did. What would you grade this?

I think the reverse holds this piece back a bit. The obverse looks VF30 but the coin probably graded VF25 because of the reverse. VF20 would be a conservative grade here since the the obverse normally carries more weight.

She's a very attractive coin. One more note, it could have been silently net-graded to VF20 if deemed to be cleaned and retoned.

VF25 seems like a fair grade.

Well I was a bit dissapointed becasue my friend kept saying how great the coin was (when I was a wee collector) I still am not the best at grading but he had my hopes up. I will post the grade after a couple more people weigh in. Thanks

I agree with the earlier post. I would go with VF25. The obverse looks like it has nice, even wear. The reverse has some more wear and it appears a bit uneven. Perhaps more the strike than wear. However, since you say you were dissapointed I am going to guess they gave it a F15. It is an awesome coin. I will be very interested to see what they graded it, Bob

I really like this series, but haven't been able to add one to my collect yet. From what I can see I would grade this coin at VF-25.

yeah, PCGS F15 is what they gave it. You were hoping for VF25

Agreed! my friend who pumped me up about it said it would grade XF so that is why my hopes were up. I didn't know much about grading at the time so I was disappointed. I know now it was/is a good grade for the coin. Thanks for weighing in. I also love this coin no matter what the grade. It was my first real purchase where I told myself I will never sell it.

Great coin indeed!

According to the PCGS database .... no value assigned with Population of 1 ... a good sign this is a worthy of many $$$ coin.

What did you pay for it?

So your saying this is the only kind of 1799 that PCGS has ever graded?
I bought it for $900 6 months ago in a large collection.

You got a steal. That coin's worth $2500 to $3000!

VF30 is a very fair grade. Your friend mislead you saying the piece was EF because it's not close to a 40. 30 is as high as that coin should ever grade.

That is not what I was saying ... and so in the spirit of helping I did some deep-dive research into the PGCS database for you ....

Your 1799 'variety' Dollar #40062 has a total of four (4) coins ever graded by PCGS .... 1 at VF-20 .. 1 at VF-30 (your coin) ... one at VF-35 and one at AU-53.

Sooo ... your VF-30 coin is indeed population of 1 with 2 finer (Pop 1/2).

And ... there are no PCGS 'suggested' prices for this 1799 variety .... which leads me to believe that it could command a premium at auction with knowledgeable buyers.

FWIW ... there are 22 total 1799 'normal' 15-star Irregular Date dollars in the PCGS database .... and the PCGS price guide for a 'normal' 1799 VF-30 is $3000.

I suspect your rarer variety could be worth a bit more than that!

Great coin indeed.

David
