This guy was in a box of cents from the bank. (Don't boxes come from the mint? How did it not get detected?)

Someone stamped a very three-dimentional portrait of Lincoln onto, well, Lincoln...a red 1955-D cent to be exact. No extra metal is used as you can see from the crater on the reverse.

Has anyone else ever seen a coin like this?

I don't know how I'm going to store it as it is too tall to fit in a folder.

You can try to fit it in a larger 2x2 holder. Try half dollar or large dollar.

That is very cool! Boxes usually come from private companys (string, brinks etc..) That's a keeper for sure!

$25 boxes of cents NEVER come from the Mint. They ship in $40K ballistics bags. The wrapping companies box the coins.

What you have there is a novelty, but it's a novelty that usually sells for $10-$20, so it's a good one. These are privately made, but are somewhat scarce at this point.

Normally, I feel sorry for mutilated cents, but I kinda like that one. Very different from the usual counter-stamp.

Wow ... that is a fun one indeed.

I say a keeper just for the novelty value!

David

Edit here ... just checked out Bobby e-pray links ... how in the world does he find this stuff?

Appears that your 55-D fits right into the world of 3-d manipulation.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

I have a quarter or something with Carter's likeness like this. You sure it's not a 55 DDO? ;)

First thing that comes to mind is those horror movies on Saturday night TV.
