I found a well worn chromed buffalo last night while going through a box. It's my second chromed buff, this one was a barely readible 1923. Wondering if there's anyone out there that knows the history or purpose for chrome plating these. I'm sure it has something to do with "enhancing" their appeal factor or novelty quotient much like the gold plating of quarters & halves, or even adding counter stamps but I don't think I've seen a topic on chrome plating yet so thought I'd throw the question out there.

Have they actually been chrome plated or possibly just highly polished? Either way they were possible done for use in jewelery.

or in science class. I know triple plate (for motorcycle wheels) has a layer of nickel under it, so it may have been practice to get the chrome to lay over the nickel correctly

Yep, chrome plated. One has that smooth glossy feeling. Even the edges have a nice shine. The other is chromed in the recesses but looks like it's worn off on the raised areas. Didn't think much of it when I found the first one (many many months ago), chalked it up to random science experiment, but after finding a second on Friday figured there must be more out there.

I think triple plate that I was talking about before is a layer of copper then a layer of nickel then a layer of chrome
Rest in Peace

Sometimes promotional "rare" coin sets sold through inserts in monthly statements are polished and appear chromed. The slippery feel sounds more like mercury. Could be any of the things mentioned.
