hey newbie to boards hoping someone can help me with these two pennies I found going through my dads wheat pennies. the 1955 d is thinner (not from wear) and I weighed it and it weighs right at 2.00 grams. could be foreign planchet? at first thought dime planchet but to light for that and read about acid bath deal like in school but doesn't appear to be messed up looking and would it just happen to be exactly 2 grams on the button after that. second one is 196? not sure last number. was it just in a dryer for long time or is it an error? first penny in pics is just for comparison size wise. thanks alot! sorry couldnt get images to upload here is link to my site with pics of them. sorry for inconvenience! they are the last two pics in the gold coin album if doesn't go right to album.

I cannot really see the 1955D well enough to say much of anything about it but the one on the right is indeed a Dryer Coin. Can you take some closer photos of the 55D?

The 1955-D appreas to be an acid dipped cent. Very common for that period of time. They would reduce a cent in chemistry with an acid to make the diameter/thickness reduced to dime size. They they would use it in a pop machine to get a soda for ten cents fooling the machine with an altered cent instead of a dime. At that time you could find 7 oz bottle of soda for 7 cents or larger bottles for a dime. The person running the machine would loose the money on this tranaction. The rim is the first area to be altered, but all the coin was disolved slowly making it thinner/narrowing the planchet.

You really should start your own thread with a title. It's considered rude to just put your coin on anther's thread.Start a new one with a new title and you should get some good answers.
