i have a nice collection of Morgan dollars that I set together over the years but never learned anything about VAM's so I was wondering if is possible to identify what variation on Morgan dollar tha is graded as xf au or is only possible to identify in the ms ones ? if is possible I will take my time to learn about it and also ll post pics of some of them to do together with you guys ; one more thing : is a significant premium over the value for a coin that is a VAM or not ?

I am able to ID the die pairing designation on About Good (AG)Morgans if the pick-up points remain. I believe you may have the common misconceptions about VAMs that most non-vammers have ... i.e., that a VAM is a "thing" on a Morgan/Peace dollar. A VAM is the designation for the obverse and reverse "die pair" used to press the coin in question. Dies came and went throughout the minting process and many were in a constant state of change due to wear and mint maintenance (polishing, re-engraving, etc). If these changes were significant, it resulted in a new VAM designation (this was and still is up to the originator of the study of Morgan/Peace die pairs ... Leroy Van Allen). What you are referring to are pick-up points or PUPs that are used to identify the die pair.

Hope this helps. There's much more information in the Classic Coin, VAM section.

thanks for the info ! from I understand are dozens maybe hundreds of VAM's because of the constant change and maintenance of the dies ?! but is there a premium for certain especific VAM'S OR NOT AT ALL just making them a different variety for that same date ?

The current number of designated VAMs is around 5000. There are "hundreds" of 1878-P's alone. The overwhelming majority of them aren't worth additional money - remember, we're talking about identifying individual dies, not individual errors - but some are worth significant money indeed.

All Morgans are VAMs. We just don't know about some of them yet.
