For those who ask what it actually costs to have coins graded by a TPG, here is the breakdown for the 5 coins I just sent to ANACS. Per-coin grading fee, for US coins valued at $2000 or less: $19 (for 15-day turnaround service). Return shipping/insurance cost, for a submission valued at $1001 - $5000: $25. My registered, insured mail cost to send in the coins: $22.60. Total: (5) x ($19) + $25 + $22.60 = $142.60. My total cost per coin is therefore $28.52. Additional services like variety attribution or VAM determination cost extra. Note that ANACS is somewhat cheaper than PCGS and NGC for coins in this price range. You can see that for many coins it's just not worth it. You could instead spend your TPG money to buy some nice silver dollars or other collector coins.

indeed, I generally only submit coins that I know will increase in value graded than if left raw.

Best to wait for a special and don't worry about turnaround time.My last 5 ended up about $19 each and two were variety attributions.(ANACS)

But if you are going to send them in, you may as well send at least 5. They charge you a 5 coin minimum regardless, so you certainly wouldn't want to send in just one.

They had a $10 special on last year with free return shipping. I just missed it so I have my eyes pealed in the hope they repeat it again this year.

its a good deal, but its only on dollars and small cents. I'm fairly certain insurance is not included in that price either. I'm actually debating whether or not to send out a packet under that deal myself. -XoG

that really is expensive! your $142 can buy a 1861 one peso gold coin with 2 grams AGW
and I understand they confiscate the coin if it turns out they deem it fake? is that true? what if the owner doesn't know it's fake? that's why he is grading it

Pretty pricey for any service it seems... What is the most cost effective way to grade one single gold coin (NGC or PCGS, no others)? In my case a 2009 UHR St Gaudens

jimineez, take a single coin to a PCGS authorized dealer and let him submit it for you. Nic, never heard of a TPG confiscating a fake, that sounds like it would open too many doors to a lawuit.

I sent my two 2009 UHR St Gaudens to NGC for grading, they both came back as ms69 proof likes. So it was well worth the fees to send them in. I would not send in a 2009 UHR to PCGS simply because they do not grade coins as proof like. Proof like designations add hundreds of dollars to ms69 coins and thousands to ms70 ones.

Quote: I understand they confiscate the coin if it turns out they deem it fake? is that true? That is incorrect, they will just send it back to the owner in a flip instead of a slab and a description on why it was not graded

Thanks Bryan1315 for that piece of info about fakes TPG. Now I know another collector told me that two years ago and it got stuck in my mind, percolating, he probably didnt want any competition on auctioning off slabbed coins

Quote: I would not send in a 2009 UHR to PCGS simply because they do not grade coins as proof like. Is it just the 2009 UHR $20 coins that they won't grade as proof-like? I know I've seen PCGS coins with proof-like ("P-L") designations, like the 1882-CC Morgan I once had graded PCGS MS-65 PL.
