Nickel closed @ $12.63 a pound today. A regular garden variety Jefferson nickel is now 144% (about 7.2 cents). At what point are these guys worth keeping? I'm all ready hoarding pre 1983 copper cents, and rag-picking them also for wheats, MS coins and errors. Very easy still to put together full sets of Lincoln Memorial cents. What about the Jeffersons? Can you find silver War Nickels, (or the 1950-D) in circulation?[00!] Moved from US Paper Money and Banknotes forum to Main Coin Forum by Forum Mom

Every War Nickel I have I found in circulation. I have 440 as of yesterday. I can't tell you how many Jeffersons I have and if I did you wouldn't believe me. Oh, and by the way, you posted this in the paper money forum

I haven't gone out and actually sought them out yet, but I've been keeping the ones I have(probably about $30 worth).

As soon as they change composition, I'll start saving them...no point right now.Yes you can find all of the business strikes in circulation. There is a thread on here somewhere where some guys have and are working on it.

its possible to find the entire Jefferson nickel series from circulation, several members of the forum have done it. I personally have not yet completed the series from circulation, but I have found an 1883 with cents in xf and a 1950 proof. Literally anything can pop up in a box of nickels. -XoG

Remember of course that the nickel is 75% copper and 25% nickel. 7 Cents sounds about right for melt value.

I agree with everyone else about being able to complete a set from circ. As a matter of fact, a box of nickels I recently searched gave up two liberty head nickels in seperate rolls. All kinds of good nickel stuff is still out there.

With the current melt value, I set an occasional roll or two aside. James Wesley Rawles recommends this on his preparedness/survival blog.

I figure I can buy all I want before they change composition...it's not like there is a shortage.

I am saving all of my nickels. I believe they will eventually go away (or change composition) and I want to give my son something to look through one day. Same thing with the copper cents and better zinc cents. Since I can afford to do it, I do it.

Looks like copper pennies and nickles are the way to go: http://www. (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed .com/

OOPS, sorry for trying to post a forbidden link. Anyway, no other coin even comes close to having face value except copper pennies and nickles. (and silver of course)

I put together a "circulation folder" of Jeffersons. But I'm still missing about 3 coins, the '50 D, being one of them of course. I upgrade the condition of these from time to time as well, since I'm a fairly avid Nickel roll searcher. And as someone mentioned, Nickels are MOSTLY COPPER.....not "Nickel". Regardless, I do not "hoard them" for any potential "precious metal content". I keep War Nickels that I find (quite a few) I keep Buffalo's that I find (both dateless and full dates) I've found a " V nickel" before too. Found Canadian Nickels.. There are enough "treasures" to find in Nickel searching that it keeps it fun for me.

My keeping them is not for the metal, either. I am keeping them for a time when everyone else is melting them for the metal. Save the nickels!
