I don't know much about the side market for coins tied to historical legacies, events or collections. I've decided to fill the rest of my slots in my Type set with AU+ coins and want to consider what might be out there!

My Type Set has a list on the front and back with details of each coin. Many are tied to my Great grandaddy, my grandfather, friends and family. Coins with a background mean more to me if that makes any sense, so I'd rather acquire something with some history behind it.

Can someone help point me in the right direction? Thanks!

It seems to me that you have the right requirements for collecting gallantry or historical medals.

The coin I received from my father and grandfather certainly mean a lot to me
but would it matter to you if my grandfather acquired a coin while he was overseas fighting in WW1?
(Not that I would sell them)

Just to clarify, you are looking for coins with a known history, correct? Like "This particular cent belonged to this particular person at one time."

jbuck, right, something along those lines. I suppose the most obvious example would be hoard coins. Looks like Littleton does that sort of thing, but I'm not looking for some type of mass marketed coin marketed on TV.

upstate - Yeah, you get the idea. Coins like yours would not carry a premium, but to me they are worth seeking out. I like my coins to have some sort of legacy or nostalgia. I want to be able to say more about a coin, rather than telling a dry story about how I walked up to a glass case and purchased the coin from a dealer.

I like to hear from the collector what makes a particular coin so special and why they have appreciated it so much. There is something about the face-to-face exchange when you acquire a fabulous coin from another collector, and this thrill is rarely found in the coin shop and never on ebay. Don't you appreciate your dinner more when you know the cook?

Of course, anyone can dream up stories for their coins... but my point is that I'm searching for ways to find coins with known histories.

Filling a penny book is one thing, but I want my type set to have some meat to it.

I know what you're talking about, Buying coins from the local area I have come across a Walking Liberty half dollar, it's worn to the point it's dateless, the old gentleman whom I purchased some coins from had a story to go with it.

In the area where I live there used to be cotton fields, asparagus fields, milk and hay, a butcher, rabbits and eggs as well as other self reliant people who sold goods to produce a living.

from what I understood talking to this man,His Dad owned a hay field and was friends with the other people (merchants)who owned the other local business that sold the commodities of the day he said in those days this was a fairly closed community not a lot of outside money or income, they paid each other with this same half dollar for years, it passed from hand to hand sometimes multiple hands multiple times on a daily basis, the coin itself is far from a collector coin like I said the date is worn off, but the story was cool.
