I'm an idiot, or rather just a distracted new dad. I had a coin go through the wash in a 2x2 holder. The coin is OK -- actually, you can't tell anything has ever happened to it -- and the 2x2 was even mostly intact, but I'm afraid now the coin counts as "cleaned". Is it ethical for me to sell this thing without disclosing that it went through a load of clothes in my jeans pocket?

If the coin was still in the 2x2 when you pulled it out then there should be no problems with hairlines or friction marks on the coin. You may want to give it a good rinsing in distilled water to remove any residual detergent.

Definitely follow Biokemist's advice and rinse with distilled water...detergent does leave residue

Done. So should I sell it as "cleaned"?

Just put a price on it and tell the story as you did here if your guts tell you to mention it.

If you were considering buying that coin, would you want to know what happened? Maybe that's your answer. That's how I would approach it.

Explain the story to any potential buyers. That would be the ethical thing to do. Sorry that happened.

usually cleaned means it has hairlines from particles in the cloth wiping the coin and making scratches. Washing a coin doesn't necessarily mean its been cleaned, just washed

IMO let the coin speak for itself... If it doesn't look cleaned then it hasn't been. Let the coin do the talking!

I'd venture to say that probably 60% of all circulated Morgans have found their way into a washing machine at one time or another (OK, probably really 90%). After you rinse it in distilled water, make sure to let it dry on an extra soft, absorbent cloth. If you're really worried, leave it out to tone for a while so all the moisture evaporates.

I also agree that this coin would not be cleaned in the Numismatic definition of cleaned. Just washed. I do not think this would impair luster if it's an MS coin.
