So since I'm in the market to get one of these in the very near future. Is this something to look for or worry about? This could be just from the extremely high resolution photo - but do you see an outline of the 4th leg? Is that normal? Or does this one make you think fake? http://cgi.ebay.com/1937-D-BUFFALO-...t_1007wt_905

I also forgot to mention - what do you think this would grade? (Huge part of the learning curve for me) I put this at AU50 which in my opinion makes this auction quite a bit over priced.

I have bought a PCGS certified coin from that seller, and offered at half price and got it. Shipping was a little slow, so prepare to wait a few days before he ships.
The one we're looking at seems high for the price, color isn't accurate either I think. Grade is a high AU.

Would be more comfortable if it was certified. Still a very nice example. Make an offer.

I understand the feeling of wanting it to be certified, but when I buy mine I'm taking it out of any holder it's in. So if I can feel confident about one not in a holder then it will probably save me some money. The one's not certified do seem to sell for less. Probably because a lot of them are fakes though ;).
I don't think I'm going to make an offer on this one. I too don't care for the color of the coin. There are enough of them out there that I can be a little bit more picky.

Probably smart to pass on this one. It has the look of a cleaned, re-toned coin to me.
You may not want a certified coin but I certainly would not consider buying one that was not certified. As you say, there are many forgeries and they are getting increasingly deceptive. Unless you are very confident in your ability to authenticate one of these it would (IMO) be prudent to pay whatever premium is required to get a PCGS, NGC, or ANACS example and then break it out to place in your collection.

Yea I'm not against buying a certified one, just wish I could feel confident enough about uncertified ones to purchase. The problem I'm finding is that I want one in or close to this grade and most of them are already certified. I'm sure the one I end up purchasing will be in a slab.

it looks loke the real deal, but I've never seen one with that coloring before-I would want to see it in hand before laying out that kind of money for one, and certainly not from a photo with that kind of coloring. As far as grade, I think it's an AU-58 if the color is legit. By the way, I've never seen a fake at a show or in a legit dealers inventory-If memory serves me, there were only 4 dies used to strike the 3 legger, and telling a real one from a fake is easy.
