Roll searching some dimes today and came across this one.... I took my 10X loupe and I can see the reeds on the copper core clearly. It looks like someone has cut the obverse off of another dime and put it on this one, but why? It is a 1970D. The groove only goes around 3/4 of the dime. Edited by Wornslick 02/08/2011 5:17 pm

It could be a chemical dip that only reacts with the copper? Just a thought. John1

I have came across alot of these,,at first years ago I was sure it was some type of secret smuggling way of hidding valued coins inside of U.S.coins,,I have cut them apart with dremel tools,,,I still do not know what causes this,,but it is common,

It may have been placed into an acid that dissolves copper and reduced the copper area of the cladding.

Any time you find a clad coin that looks like an oreo cookie with a recessed middle layer that retains reeding, it's been attacked by acid or some other corrosive liquid. The reeding will also appear "scalloped", with the grooves wider than normal and the ridges thinner than normal

Now that I look at it, it does resemble a oreo cookie. If it is damage buy a liquid why doesn't the clad part show damage also?

The pure copper core is much more reactive than the CuNi cladding so the acid attacks it more readily.
