20th anniversary of Victory in WW2. This monument is actually somewhere in (formerly East) Germany.

Quote: This monument is actually somewhere in (formerly East) Germany. Now that makes total sense, as the soldier stands on a busted up swastika.

It says something about German Fascism as well, in my basic Russia reading ability. They made loads of these one rouble and two rouble and five rouble commemoratives. Makes you wonder why, considering most people could not get what they actually wanted in life, East Germany was the same, insane number of commemoratives!

Quote: It says something about German Fascism Literal translation of the reverse legend is 20 years of victory over the Fascist Germany.Quote: They made loads of these one rouble and two rouble and five rouble commemoratives This one was the very first Soviet commemorative and it was intended for circulation so, indeed, there were tons of them. The first "collector's" commemoratives were issued around 1980 Olympics, and for the first time there were 5r and 10r coins, but majority of the general population didn't even know about their existence. But ever since people called all the commemorative ruble coins "olympic".

I don't have one of these, but if I recall correctly, the date is actually inscribed on the rim?

That is correct! And, of course, everybody knew when the V-day was, so dating this coin was not a mystery (for the circulating folks). The yearly celebration of Victory still is the big deal in Russia
