My 7yo daughter was recently given an eclectic coin collection by a friend of the family who was moving overseas. Two of the coins are very old, and remind us of some of the old Roman coins we've seen in the museum. She's very curious about them and I'd like to encourage her interest. Can anyone point us in the right direction? I realize these are in pretty bad shape...I've done my best with the pictures but there's not a lot to go on.

Thanks in advance,
Erika

The coins aren't ancient Roman, but appear to be Spanish cob coins of the late 16th century.

Thanks so much for the fast reply, echizento! I think 400 year old Spanish coins are even a more interesting possibility than Roman ones. :)

To encourage her further, these are the stuff of Pirate Treasure! Try looking at the website of Daniel Sedwick:

www.sedwickcoins.com

He specialises in these coins and his site has lots of information. He is also the best person to contact for more information about your two examples. Chris Wren

Thank you! After doing some more research based on echizento's tip, I see that they seem to be 1 Real pieces of the Potosi mines, of the 'pillar and waves' type. The one on the right seems to be from 1718. But all the ones I've seen online say 'plv svl tra' like the coin on the left; but the coin on the right seems to say 'pl vs vl'. Did they change the motto at some point? And should I move this thread to the World Coins forum?

You can't... but we can. Done.

The dies used to make these coins were all hand-carved. They didn't have any means of mass-producing working dies in the 1700s. The die-carvers were attempting to engrave as many of the letters of the words "PLVS VLTRA" (Latin for "more beyond", the motto of the Spanish kingdom) as they could fit on one line around and between the two pillars. Some die-engravers simply did a better job than others.

Welcome Erika - nice cob coins - very good for a beginner.

I collect later Spanish Colonial and Mexican coin COUNTERFEITS - so if you ever run into fakes drop[ me a line. Cobs are very heavily forged but the two you have seem to be fine (real Reales)

The 1718 coin is a Lima mint coin, not a Potosi coin.
