spoken about many times before, their company is a basement slabbing company. they take coins that look like that and put MS65* grades on them after they polish them to death. steer clear.

Coin looks to grade FR/AG, and is no way worth $89. Is the seller of this coin ABONCOM or something like that? He is the head of this STAR basement slabbing atrocity, and I lost $500 purchasing a coin from him that ended up being counterfeit about 3-4 years ago(when I was a newbie). He is on the top of my "seller to avoid like the plague" list. I'm not saying that you would never find a decent SGS coin graded somewhere for a decent price....but just be very VERY wary.

i would only buy star graded coins that were clearly circulated, and even then only at scrap prices. Not a reputable certification company, if one would even call them that.

This oldtimer suggests you pass on this coin at $89. You can probably find a comparable coin at just about any coin show for about $50 in today's market. The Chinese have yet to make copies in low grades such as this and probably never will, so certification would then appear to be a moot point, huh?
I'm at a loss to explain why anyone would go to the expense of certifying a coin such as this? I suppose it could impress some folks, being in a holder and all. What does SGS stand for ... Someone's Grading Service? I'm not familiar with them, an I've been collecting coins over fifty years now.

I'm positive I could grade that at least MS97 with an attached star for a nominal price

Sadly, I am certain that would be a profitable venture.

Quote: I'm at a loss to explain why anyone would go to the expense of certifying a coin such as this? When you understand that probably more than 95% of all the SGS slabbed coins have been slabbed for one submitter, and he also happens to own SGS it becomes very understandable. The only expense is the cost of the shell.

Hey Everyone I have bought coins on ebay from this so called grading company. I bought a box of 25 2001 DCAM Roosevelt dimes, and yes they where all graded at 70. Normally I would not even considered basement slabbed, but DCAM'S are pretty easy to see, especially with a loop, so I followed the old guide this time and (Bought the coin not the holder). Cheers Alan
