Last year I went to a big coin show (400+ tables) in Baltimore. I noticed that NPC and PCGS both had booths set up, but I did not bother going to them. Will they grade a coin in person there? Like can I pay to get it slabbed at one of those tables? Or are they just there to give you an "opinion"?

Thanks!

Yes, I believe that they will grade coins at shows; however, it is rather expensive to do. PCGS charges $200 to grade one coin at a show with a 2-3 hour turnaround time.

Ah... well that puts a damper on things. Thank you for the information. My father wants to have one of his gold coins certified and was wondering if it was worth waiting for the show or not.

It is possible to submit the coin at the show and not have it graded there. That saves the postage and insurance one way. As nolawyer said the cost for walkthrough grading done at the show is so expensive it usually isn'
t worth doing unless you have a mid four figure coin.

If you have coins ready to submit this approach can save you some money. You can sign up with PCGS at the show for their Gold or Platinum membership which include 4 and 8 "free" submissions, respectively. Then submit your 4 (Gold) or 8 (Platinum) coins on the spot. These can include a mix of US and foreign coins and/or gold coins. This saves you the expense and bother of mailing your submission and will give you the lowest available per-coin grading cost.

I don't know if NGC has a similar program but I wouldn't be surprised.

I'll have to see if he can scrounge up 4 coins to be graded. He doesn't even own a TPG graded coin so I'm not sure why he wants to get some of his gold certified, but he does.

At the fun show in Tampa Anacs had a table where they would take in coins, saving you postage and insurance but the turn around time was a max 14 days. There was a show special also.
Rest in Peace

With, multiple TPGs at a show, you may be able to get non-binding opinions before deciding who to use. Also, I would think if they can take just a few seconds to determine a fake/bodybag, they wouldn't charge, but pretty sure they charge for anything sent in.

ANACS used to give verbal opinions at shows but that was awhile back. The official position of NGC and PCGS has typically been no verbal opinions given at shows, and the employees at the tables accepting the coins are NOT the graders. So what good is a verbal opinion from someone who is not a grader? They stopped giving opinions because they were catching flak over coins that were given an opinion at the show but which came back from grading at either a lower grade or even bodybagged. They decided it wasn't worth the headache and stopped giving opinions.
