Here's a short story on my experience with collecting Morgans. I have bought, sold, and traded them since 1968. My first major purchase was $500 for 75 different dates and MMs in the Fall of 1968. My estimate of their value now is approx. $12,000-$15,000. Now here's the rub. In 1981 when we were all buying and selling, and silver bullion and coin values exploded, I have a list of some of the coins I purchased then. These coins were all MS60-63. Here also is the MS60 Red Book value for them in 1981...as follows.

1878-S....$45
1879-O....$55
1880-O....$85
1881......$45
1882-CC $170
1883-CC $65
1890......$45
1890-O....$85
1890-S....$85
1891......$175
1891-O....$175
1892......$150
1892-O....$200
1898-S....$310
1899-S....$425
1902......$95
1903......$85
1904......$350
1921-D....$50
1921-S....$75

I don't know exactly what I paid for the above Morgans but I suppose somewhere in the ballpark of the above figures minus about 10%. Alot of the above coins cost me more then, as compared to todays prices.. So, as an investment for the future, be careful!...

"in 1981 when we were all buying and selling"

Speak for yourself, my parents hadn't even met yet in 1981.
