Could someone chime in on this coin? I'm wondering if the area on her cheek is a strike through or something similar. There is no metal plowed up around the trench. The low area is dull grey in color while the coin shows a moderate amount of lustre. The diagonal line from the bulb of the nose running NE is a hit. TIA nlp

do to the color of this area, I don't believe its something from the mint or mint error..it looks like foreign material or PMD Just my opinion...

Blowing up the last picture, at my best opinion, I'd have to say PMD. The top of the suggested area looks to be slightly ragged from having been scraped. Again, just my opinion Noel.

I thought PMD at first also but couldn't figure out how a gouge so deep would not leave a furrow and the surface texture of the gouge is a little off color but the same texture as the cheek. I would think it would have a shinny or flattened surface texture. I'll see if I can get a scope shot of the bottom of the gouge later this evening. nlp

Here we go. First pic is 20X the next four are 200X. Notice the wood grain type lines in the furrow at an oblique angle to the axis of the groove. How would PMD do that? nlp

Hmmmm. I see what you mean. One day I will get a microscope! The "grain" looks raised.
