I have three 1849 California gold coins.I have very little Info on them, I have done some poking around but not much real information. I stumbled into a store (without the coins)where I spoke with a gentleman and he told me they were only worth their weight. He would send them off and get melted down... Now mind you I know very little about currency / coin collecting but I have the sneaking suspicion hes full of crap.
Anyway heres the pictures
Any information or help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you
p.s. If you need better quality pictures I can get out my good camera.

They are all tokens. Not genuine California gold fractionals.

Awesome... Stupid things have been sitting in this box of coins for well over 15 years now. What a riot....

Thanks for taking the time to look. Next post will be better I promise.

I also think the guy at the store is full of it because if they had been real I doubt it he would be sending these off to get melted.

The reproductions usually have little to no gold in them(sometimes they are plated). Was he offering to pay your their weight in gold? If so, you'd be getting the better end of the deal. However, if they were genuine california gold pieces, they would be worth many multiples of their gold weight; and his offer would be a rip-off and he would not send them to be melted.

Check out any year Red Book, known as the Guide Book of U.S. Coins, by Yeoman. Look up "California Gold" through the index. Therein, you'll see how to differentiate between the genuine and the fake tokens. Personally, having collected coins and tokens for over fifty years now, I've yet to encounter a fake one that was made of real gold. Sadly, I once sat in a local auction, wherein a number of the fakes fetched over $200, each.
