I can't decide if this is MD, DD or a mix of both!? HELP What throws me off is the splits on some of the letters, like the TED in UNITED and the TAT in states. Only 2 DDR's listed on coppercoins and this is neither of them: http://www.coppercoins.com/diesearc...int=p&page=1 Gimme some opinions please.

Interesting. The motto seems rather thick, too.

Not sure if it helps, but there's pretty strong MD on ONE CENT too. Not worth taking a picture of because I'm 100% sure it's MD.

I've searched hundreds of 1983 OBW rolls and the coin pictured befuddled me for years. There are variations of it, several....I've concluded that it has to be a form of Strike Doubling. There is indeed a fantastic DDR #2, but you will see clear and obvious doubling on EPU. Photos of the DDR # 2 can be found in Ken Potter and Brian Allen's fantastic book "Strike it Rich" 2nd edition page 67.

Thanks Chris, I don't feel so bad about being undecided. Looks like a new member to the befuddled club. Do I get a card to carry?

If any of us thinks we have all the answers, that's the precise moment that we're no longer able to help anyone....I genuinely believe that the longer one stays in the hobby, the more questions he'll have. You'll answer plenty of things for yourself along the way, but when you look at large sums of coins, there'll always be things worth getting a second opinion on. One of the awesome aspects of our hobby is that the highly experienced make themselves so accessible to newcomers. Most authorities on die varieties are happy to attribute coins, always for less than the actual time involved is worth.
I've come to realize what an incredible resource forums are. You're able to put the brains of thousands together for a combined experience of probably thousands of years.....pretty incredible.

Looks like classic Machine Doubling. Flat shelf like, the devices are normal sized. No doubled die here.

Have to agree with coop...but it is pretty difficult to discern at first glance.

Definitely Machine Doubling, but not the classic die-bounce type. This one appears to have had a very soft second strike in the collar. Not that it would be worth anything more, but the degree of difference between the two strikes is more than typical die bounce.

Thanks Chuck...I don't feel so bad for posting this. I just hate to post an obviously MDed coin, this one had me scratching my head because it doens't quite fully fit the bill.
