Oh, how very true. And the thing is that the Chinese counterfeiters are actually proud of their work. They see NO problem with what they do. Smart, informed collectors/investors will not get taken like this pawn shop owner. Know how to spot fakes.

Very fortunately, having learned from the CCF, there a lot of cynical and wary folks in this Forum when it comes to Chinese fakes. That has to be a very good thing, and healthy for modern numismatics.
But one thing worse than this that I can think of is that American and Australian manufacturing jobs have been exported to China.

I know that there are ways to spot a fake in hand. But, has anyone put together a database of pictures online of fake coins? Are they generally in mint condition? Or will counterfeiters purposely age and tone coins to make them look as if they have been around the block?

But I thought everything sold in the US was "Made in China". Do they still make stuff here?

At least there are laws in place to protect US coins and make counterfeiting them illegal but sadly when it comes to foreign coins it's a free for all for the counterfeiters. Besides U.S. coins I also collect Mexican coins like the 8 Reales and it sickens me to see the amount of crap that is coming in from china.

Could it be that the EZ Pawn buyer thought he was hooking a fish, buying an 1893-S Morgan plus nine others for a measley $400? A few years ago, I was standing in a coin dealer's booth at a flea market. I'd been chatting about coins with him when a man approached, wanting to sell a wallet of twenty Morgan dollars for about $1200 as I recall. That was well over spot silver at the time. Almost all of the coins were common dates, mostly 1921's. I asked to look at them while the dealer checked his gray sheet. The Morgans all looked genuine but for one, an 1889-CC (Chinese Copy) in XF condition. I rescued the dealer who was seriously pondering the purchase. The seller shrugged, perhaps feigning ignorance? The moral to this story is watch out for fakes that are mixed with genuine coins AND, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is just that.

I saw this on the coin calculator site earlier this week but honestly who was being more dishonest, the seller saying he thinks they might be fake or the seller giving way under melt with a 1893-s that was in there was worth couple grand by itself if it was real. I dont feel bad for the guy at all, just because he said he has been buying and selling coins for years so he should of known when a super rare high grade coin came in to check the weight of it or have an expert come in and check it out but he thought he hit the jackpot.

I like the picture. Copyright Peninsula Daily News? That picture is from the Ask.com story about the chinese counterfeiters from over two years ago.

Sounds like these coins were the wrong weight and had obvious counterfeit markings. If a pawn shop owner wants to deal in Morgan dollars, he had better learn a thing or two about the coin before he starts buying up thousands of dollars worth (!)
