Hi, all:

Wondering if someone can help me out with this? I have never seen a Canadian penny this color before. Almost a yellowy-gold color. The coin is also slightly warped (bent). I have scanned it with a "normal" colored penny for comparison sake. I'm thinking it was struck on a wrong planchet?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

My guess is that it is gold plated.

I'm not sure about that. I would like to get a scale that weighs .00 grams, mine just weighs .0 grams. I would like to know if there is a difference in weight from a regular penny. In all the pennies I have seen, I have never seen one this color.

Thanks,
Steve

Are both sides the same color? If not, then it may have been installed in a ring, where only side received a coating. I have such a penny I took out of a ring, where only one side was coated differently, and the other side still has a little petina on it. It was a 1965 penny.

Hi, Uncle Al:

Both sides are the same color and there is no indication that it may have been mounted. Other than the slight warp and a small split (approx 4mm) on the edge, all appears normal. I have included a scan of the obverse.

Thank you for your welcome to the forum. I still have to do a formal introduction.

Thank you,
Steve

Hi
I have a very similar coin from 1964. The information I have been able to find indicated this was gold plated as part of an anniversary or other event. I have found no indication they were minted this way.

They were not minted this way and the colour while gold in appearance is often not actually gold.

Most often, the coin is simply pickled, dipped in zinc powder and then heated forming a layer of VERY yellow brass because of the high surface concentration of zinc right on the surface of the penny. It's a very easy experiment and popular throughout high school labs with Bunsen burners etc..

I'm not sure which this is from the photos, but I'm leaning to brass because they chose a 1974 mostly copper cent but that doesn't preclude gold plating by any means.

A short video to what Ugly has explained. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCxt...0&playnext=7
I think this cent was plated due to the sheen/reflection of the metal.

That's why I think it's brass. Gold on copper is deeper yellow and dull and takes on an orange ruddy sheen when plated directly over copper without a layer of nickel because the metals migrate. Colour from pictures is always tough though.

Edit: I've plated a lot of things and pennies are my favourite for testing a plating bath because their composition is exactly known and the material is really cheap.

I agree -Ugly- I'm sure I saw this coin years ago!
---It's been gnawing at for days, trying to remember!
---I just cant remember what the exact circumstance of it was,
but was a dipped coin with what? Don't know exactly and don't care really
it was associated as a novelty with something? Just PM (Junk)

A lot of these are the result of school experiments. I have come across at least 20 of these in all different years.

I like the bunson burner theory, but it still doesn't answer why there is no dot between the K and the C. I have one of these coins as well, but it is not yellow, it looks nickle or maybe partly silver. No dot... I wonder if it was part of a bank collection coin set or something? I guess the answer is still the same..
