I think this is in the die crack pre-retained Cud. The devices haven't moved yet to call it a Retained Cud. But very close.

Thanks for straightening me out Coop- for any coin that's not a die variety, I won't claim to be sure of it. I usually rely on Mike Diamond to tell me I'm wrong- He's very good at it! lol

Still a keeper. A variety would have been showing doubling from coin #1. Error coin in my book usually have once or a few times. Die wear/cracks/chips/breaks/cuds are part of the normal life of a coin till they are retired. But people collect these. I save many non numismatic coins for education images in case someone has a question, I can find one without looking through hundreds of cents.

Maybe I read wrong- but how do you have a non-numismatic coin? Isn't that like a non-citrus lemon?
I do have an educational collection as well- mine focuses on counterfeit and fake errors- both die varieties, striking and planchet (fake) errors, I purchase them to keep them off the market as well as learning tools.

This IS a Retained Cud...the rim has moved. That's all that counts.

Quote: I usually rely on Mike Diamond to tell me I'm wrong- He's very good at it! He has a bad habit of doing that, doesn't he? Chuck slaps me around quite often as well (as does coop). But, I've noticed I don't post anywhere near the junk I used to. So, that's a good thing.

I'm pretty confident of anything I post, I've studied die varieties (yes, I know the above coin is not a die variety) since I was 12, over 20 years now. I just don't have the energy to go back and forth with novice opinions. Sometimes an authority corrects me, but not on actual die varieties, that's my strength. I fall on experts when it comes to planchet and striking errors.

Don't let ME be the final authority on error coins - I know only what I have absorbed through osmosis. I don't study them nor do I profess to know much about them. Die varieties, on the other hand, are a completely different animal which I do know quite well.

Chuck- I subscribe to your school of thought. There's no teacher like 200 bags of pennies! Seriously, I know I've looked at over a million coins under a loupe. No exaggeration- and after seeing a great quantity, one becomes quite familiar with what is significant vs a common and worthless anomaly. You can have every "authority" in the world tell you what they think, but until you've cherried it and understand it's origin and cause, it won't mean much. I'm very much self taught, but not without reference books and the opinions of others.

Very cool....reminds me of a progression set I sold to wheezydog sometime ago. The last two coins in the pictures: https://goccf.com/t/69841

Thanks so much for sharing Thad, I'm a real fan of die crack to Cud progressions. The only place you can ever hope to find them is in fresh, original BU stuff. Getting tougher all the time!

I would call it an arcing rim-to-rim die crack or a pre-cud die crack. I don't see vertical displacement or horizontal offset. All I see is lateral spread, indicating the portion of the die demarcated by the crack was still probably attached to the die neck.
