I have the most hopes for this penny actually being a real error coin than any of the other coins I've found so far.

The raised section at the bottom appears to be the result of a chipped die. Take that remark with a grain of salt, though, as I have ZERO experience in identifying coins with such errors. It's definitely part of the original form of the coin, nothing added later in any way.

So I finally found something real? Woot! Now then, how do I find out what it's worth?

You have a nice Cud there! Difference between a Cud and a die chip is the fact that a Cud will ALWAYS affect the edge and shaft of the die and be located at the rim of a coin. Notice the corresponding weakness at the same spot on the reverse, this is a telltale sign of a real Cud. Die chips are usually just curiosities and don't really carry a premium but Cuds do have a premium depending on location and size. Your cent would probably be worth a few dollars.

I'm not sure how to find out exactly what it's worth, but at least in the $20-$25 range. Cuds like this one are generally highly desirable among error collectors, especially those collecting Cuds by die and stage. This example appears to be defect free and a nice grade for a 1988 cent...which often suffer from corrosion.

So where do you guys take your coins if you desire to sell them? If a coin I find isn't worth much I'm just going to keep it for the novelty. But a penny worth $20 - $25, I'd actually like to sell it and buy myself a nice meal. I might check out the phone book later today.
